A much branched shrub, from 1-2.3 m high. Stems glabrous. Leaves glabrous, glaucous, coriaceous, entire near the inflorescence, dissected below, the transition abrupt or gradual. Entire leaves from 8-25 mm long, imbricate, the petiole erect, the lamina ovate to f label late, often as wide as long, the sides curving upwards, the margin cartilaginous. Dissected leaves up to 45 mm long, divided in the upper half or two thirds, the apiculum translucent. Spike 30-40 mm long, 20-30 mm wide, sessile, dense, flowers pink within, strongly honey-scented. Bracts subtending the partial inflorescences about 8 mm long, coriaceous, deep reddish brown, glabrous except at the base, with a narrow, shortly hairy base, widening suddenly and becoming broadly ovate, the lower bracts somewhat acute, the upper obtuse. Floral bracts about as long as the subtending bracts, very obtuse, wrapping round the flowers, dark reddish brown above, green below, mostly glabrous, but with short hairs on the lower half. Perianth of the mature bud 12 mm long, the segments glabrous at the base only, elsewhere covered with coarse, white, upwardly directed hairs projecting about 1 mm beyond the apex, all segments alike. Style glabrous; pollen presenter 1.9-2 mm long somewhat wider than the style in the middle, with a slight knee-like bend at the base. From: Levyns, MRB. 1970.
