Morphological description

Plants 300-600 mm high, usually forming dense clumps but sometimes solitary. Corm ± 15 mm diam. Stem with lowermost peduncle 25-45(-75) mm long. Foliage leaves several, 100-400 x 1-4 mm; reduced sheathing leaves ± 3. Spikes pendulous, terminal 1- to 4(5)-flowered, laterals up to 5, each 1- to 3(4)-flowered; bracts broadly obovate-elliptic to lanceolate-elliptic, 12-18 x 7-10 mm, usually 1.5 internodes long, bright rusty brown and flecked as well, lateral veins 6 to 8 each side of main vein. Flowers funnel-shaped with tepals flaring, bright pink or reddish; perianth tube 5-7 mm long; tepals 14-22 x 4.5-8.5 mm. Anthers 5-7 mm long. Stigmas held (6-)9-15 mm below top of perianth. Perennial herb, geophyte 0.35-0.60 m high; stems may form clumps; corm 15 mm in diam. Leaves linear, acute; radical leaves 100-400 x 1-4 mm; reduced sheathing leaves 3. Flowering stem 0.3-0.6 m high. Inflorescence a raceme of spikes; with 5 branches, pendulous, lax. Bracts bright rusty brown, 12-18 x 7-10 mm, obovate-oblong to lanceolate-elliptic, flecked. Perianth bright pink or reddish, rarely with white spots, 20-28 mm long; tube 5-7 mm long; tepals 14-22 x 4.5-8.5 mm. Anthers 5-7 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-Jan. Diagnostic description

A small, clump-forming species 300-600 mm tall, with narrow leaves 1-4 mm wide and delicate, few-flowered spikes of funnel-shaped, pink to reddish flowers with characteristic small, rusty red bracts 12-18 mm long, with 6 to 8 veins each side of the main vein. The perianth is 20-28 mm long, with narrow tepals 4.5-8.5 mm wide. Dierama nebrownii, also with brown bracts with 6 to 8 veins each side of the main vein, is a taller species with mostly solitary stems 800-1000 mm tall. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Distribution

Widespread along the eastern escarpment, from Naude’s Nek in Eastern Cape, South Africa, along the KwaZulu-Natal Drakensberg and foothills to Harrismith and north to Mt Sheba in Mpumalanga, also in Inyanga in Zimbabwe.
