PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / SAXIFRAGALES / CRASSULACEAE / CRASSULOIDEAE / CRASSULA / SETULOSA / JENKINSII
Perennials with erect leaves usually irregularly arranged to form untidy cushions. Leaves lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, 5-15(-25) x 3-7 mm, sharply acute, glabrous or with short subdistant erect cilia, flat above and very convex below, spreading at about right angles on peduncle; sheath up to 1 mm long. Inflorescence a terminal cyme with 1-3(-5) flowers. Calyx: lobes linear-triangular, glabrous or with few irregularly placed teeth, sharply acute. Corolla: lobes oblong to oblanceolate, acute, with pointed dorsal appendage often longer than apex, papillose particularly towards apex. Anthers 0.8-1.3 mm long, dark purple to black. Squamae transversely oblong to almost square. Carpels with oblong-reniform ovaries and slender styles about as long as ovaries. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Succulent perennial herb, with erect leaves usually irregularly arranged to form untidy cushions. Inflorescence a terminal cyme with 1-3(-5) flowers. Petals tuberculate, with pointed dorsal appendage, 3.0-4.5 mm long. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Plants of the northern provinces of South Africa: Keys and diagnostic characters. Strelitzia 6: 1-681. National Botanical Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Although the plant occurs over a very wide range, not many specimens have been collected, possibly because it usually grows in inaccessible places on rock faces. Vegetative material may easily be mistaken for specimens of C. bloubergensis, which is here considered a form of var. setulosa, and it is only by its few terminal flowers and axillary buds which develop below the inflorescence that var. jenkinsii can be identified. Specimens with distinct marginal cilia are considered to be hybrids with var. setulosa as these plants usually also have a corolla not longer than 4 mm. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Growing in sheltered rock crevices often only on very shallow soil on rock faces in ravines, usually on the south-east facing aspect. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Sheltered rock crevices. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Plants of the northern provinces of South Africa: Keys and diagnostic characters. Strelitzia 6: 1-681. National Botanical Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Known only from a few localities in western parts of Transvaal from near Rustenburg to the Blouberg in the north. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
