Morphological description

Stems 4-8 in. high, simple or branched at the base, bifariously puberulous; leaves ascending or somewhat spreading, 2-3.5 in. long, 0.5-1.75 lin. broad, linear, acute, with revolute margins; umbels pedunculate or subsessile, 3-8-flowered, globose; peduncle 1-4.5 lin. long; bracts 1-3 lin. long, linear-subulate, glabrous; pedicels about 1 lin. long, rather stout, puberulous; sepals 2-2.5 lin. long, 0.75 lin. broad, lanceolate, acute, glabrous; corolla-lobes 3 lin. long, 1.25-1.3 lin. broad, oblong, obtusely pointed, erect, concave at the basal part, convex and recurved-revolute at the tips, glabrous on both sides with a velvety sheen on the surface of the apical part, whitish; corona-lobes erect, exserted beyond the corolla, 3-4 lin. long, nearly 1 lin. broad at the base, lanceolate, gradually tapering to a subulate incurved-hooked apex, prominently and acutely keeled down the back, with a rhomboid expansion on the back at the base, flattish or perhaps slightly channelled on the inner face, apparently purple-brown with paler margins; staminal column about 1.5 lin. long; anther-appendages ovate, acute, with their tips inflexed over the rim of the shallowly crater-like style-apex. Perennial, geophytic herb, 100-410 mm high; stems basally branched, uniseriately hairy or glabrous. Leaves longer than internodes, blade 10-140 x 2-7 mm. Inflorescence 4-12-flowered, ± globose; peduncles 2-10 mm, erect, pubescent. Flowers: pedicels 0.5-2.0 mm long; corolla dorsally green, lobes cream-coloured inside, 3 x 2 mm, narrowly triangular, margins revolute, apex recurved, papillose; corona lobes ventrally white, dorsal surface maroon, up to 10 mm long, sessile, abruptly broadened, triangular, long-attenuate, reaching over conical style head, ventral side of process furrowed, apical ends inflexed. Pollinia curved inwards, translators broad. Flowering time Nov.-Mar., peaking in Dec., Jan. Fruit finely pubescent, 25-45 x 3-7 mm, bristles up to 2 mm long. Flowers: inflorescence subsessile; pedicels 2 mm long; corona with apical horn bending inwards over gynostegial column, channelled on ventral surface, side flanks slightly extended; corona lobes 6-8 mm long, purple-brown with paler margins; corolla cup-shaped, edge revolute, tips recurved; green with maroon outside, cream-coloured to white inside; Nov.-Mar., Jun.
