A variable species which requires further study. At present the variation does not fall into a clear-cut pattern and so no purpose can be seen in upholding the varieties recognized in Flora Capensis. Its nearest affinity is with S. hyssopoides but it does not form rhizomes and the leaves are more markedly tomentose. From: Codd, LEW. 1985. Lamiaceae: 13. Stachys. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S.
