Morphological description

Erect (rarely ascending to decumbent) unbranched or little branched annual herb; stems to 1(1.5) m long, finely sericeous or densely so when young with downwardly directed appressed hairs or sericeous-puberulous with hairs bending down apically, no capitate glands. Leaves sparsely sericeous-puberulous along veins and edges, with or without sparse yellow subsessile glands; petiole to 2(4) cm long; lamina ovate to elliptic or narrowly so (rarely lanceolate or obovate), largest (3)4-12 x (0.8)1-5.5(6.5) cm, usually 2-4 times as long as wide; apex acute or subacute (rarely rounded); base attenuate, decurrent. Flowers solitary or paired, usually in numerous axillary racemoid cymes, long and many-flowered downwards, gradually shorter upwards, sometimes ± fusing to form an elongated terminal pseudo-raceme; main axis bracts foliaceous, raceme bracts imbricate, oblong-elliptic or broadly so (rarely obovate), lowermost pairs usually orbicular to reniform, 4-9(11) x 3-7 mm in middle of racemes, subacute to truncate with recurved tip, always with distinct 'shoulders', lower with rounded to subcordate base, finely puberulous and with few to many stalked yellow capitate glands, distinctly ciliate (rarely not) with broad glossy ciliae 1-2 mm long; bracteoles linear or acicular, 1-1.5 mm long. Calyx 4-7 mm long, finely sericeous-puberulous with a mixture of broad non-glandular hairs, short non-capitate glands and scattered stalked yellow capitate glands; lobes linear to filiform, cuspidate, with a single central vein. Corolla white to purple, with or without purple lines on lower lip, puberulous and with scattered capitate glands, 5.5-10 mm long; tube 3.5-6 mm long; upper lip 2-5 mm long, flat or slightly hooded; lower lip 3-6 mm long, broadly obovate, lobes 1-2 mm long. Filaments c. 2 mm long; anthers hairy, thecae 0.5-0.75 mm long, lower with simple or bifurcate appendage 0.5 mm long. Capsule 4.5-7 mm long, densely sericeous-puberulous, hairs spreading near apex, deflexed near base. Seeds mottled grey and black, 2-2.5 x 2.5-3 mm, glabrous. From: Vollesen, KB. 2015. 126. Habitat

Woodland, bushland and grassland on a wide range of soils, commonly in old cultivation, on roadsides and as a weed, seems to thrive in areas with slight to moderate disturbance.
