Morphological description

Shrubs branching distally, the inner stems blackish; leaves of a pair apically divided to various degrees, glaucous green, epidermis somewhat rough from raised dots which become prominent in the dry state, stomata only a little sunken; flowers 1-3, bracts and bracteoles with marked dorsal humps or divisions, bracteoles at c. half the length of the long pedicels, 20-30 mm Ø, with 50-80 yellow petals to 20 mm long and 1 mm broad, purplish suffused outside, 110-160 stamens with white filaments and yellow anthers; fruit with rather low rims, covering membranes pressing against the flat, sill-shaped, mostly divided closing body, expanding keels widely separated basally, valve wings very narrow. Perennial, dwarf shrublet, up to 0.2 m high; roots fibrous, stems woody dark brown, almost black with age, much branched at apex. Leaves flattened, apex divided into 2 lobes, epidermis covered by raised white dots. Flowers solitary to ternate, yellow, suffused with red at apex and outer surfaces. Flowering time June-Aug. Capsules 5-locular, closing bodies inconspicuously bifid, covering membranes complete, valve wings very narrow at their bases. From: Burgoyne, PM; Bredenkamp, CL. 2019. Slope: moderate. Biotic effect: grazed. Succulent. Plant height: 0.150m. Roots: well developed tap and lateral roots. Branches out radially flat on ground. Stem: with dead black leaves along them. Leaves: club-shaped with 2 soft spines on top. Fruits: pentagonal topped cone. Occasional.
