Densely tufted, reed-like perennial, up to 2 m high. Leaf blade 1000 (or more) x 5-15 mm; ligule a fringe of hairs. Inflorescence a dense, contracted panicle, 200-400 mm long. Spikelets up to 14 mm long, laterally compressed; glumes 10-13 (-18) mm long, 1-nerved. Florets 3 or 4; lemma 7-8 mm long, a tufted row of white hairs 5-7(-12) mm long across middle; lobes 3.5-4.0 mm long, free from central awn, awnless; central awn 5-14 mm long, sometimes longer, twisted at base.
