Corm ovoid-subglobose, 2-4(-5) cm long and 1.5-3(-4) cm broad, with loose, brown tunics, sometimes protracted into a wiry neck up to 12 cm long. Cataphyll 5-15 cm long, straw-coloured to brownish, apically dilated and terminated by an acute or mucronate tip. Stem above-ground part (6-)10-20(-45) cm high, simple or rarely forked. Leaves 2-5, usually 3, erecto-patent to spreading or recurved, 4-20 cm long, 1-3 cm wide near the base, tapering to an acute or acuminate tip, green or often somewhat glaucous. Raceme fairly dense to lax, short or elongated, 2-30 cm long, 3-25-flowered. Bracts lanceolate, acuminate, mostly about half the length of the pedicel or less, 1-5 cm long, lowermost bract longer and more leaf-like, up to 10 cm long. Pedicels erecto-patent, becoming spreading or somewhat reflexed, straight or curved, normally cernuous near the apex, (1.5-)2-6(-7) cm long. Perianth actinomorphic, 2-4 cm in diam. Tepals 10-25 mm long, becoming reflexed during anthesis; claw distinct, (1.5-)2-5 mm long, 1-1.3 mm wide, flattened; blade lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, (8-)9-18(-22) mm long, (1.5-)2-4 mm wide, with many (8-14) indistinct veins, dull-coloured in shades of green, purple or brown, often abaxially green and adaxially with a green centre and a purplish-maroon or brown base and margins, ± acute. Nectary a distinctly mouth- or funnel-shaped structure at the transition between claw and blade, its margin often irregular, emarginate or with a frontal slit, rarely forming an incomplete ring open at the back. Filaments (5-)7-13 mm long, slightly thickened below or at about the middle, 0.2-0.5(-0.7) mm thick, the basal 1/3-1/4 whitish or light-coloured, otherwise purplish. Anthers (2.3-)3-5 mm long, 0.8-1.5 mm thick, brownish- or yellowish-green (drying brown). Styles (4-)5-9(-10) mm long, erecto-patent to spreading, greenish-yellow, often purplish basally. Ovary oblong-ovoid, 2-3 mm long, greenish. Capsule ovoid-oblong, 1.5-2.5 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide. Seeds globose or nearly so, 2-3 mm in diam., dark chocolate-brown to blackish-brown, smooth (but at high magnification 'micro-ruminate', with twisted ridges); raphe ridge- or wing-like along 1/3-1/2 of the circumference, up to 1 mm high, often lighter-coloured than the testa, sometimes with funiculus up to 3 mm long. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1982. A monograph of the genus Ornithoglossum (Liliaceae). Opera Bot. 64: 5-51. [10.1111/j.1756-1051.1983.tb01058.x] [All rights reserved]

The most characteristic feature is the funnel-shaped nectary, Some variation in the shape of the nectary is also observed in other regions. The nectary opening may be somewhat elongated and its margin may be irregularly incised, sometimes with a deep adaxial slit. In general appearance the species most closely resembles O. vulgare, though the morphology of the nectary region of the latter is very different. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1982.
