Plants (50-)80-150 mm high. Corm globose, rounded, 10-20 mm diam., oblique, tunics woody, splitting into curved teeth below. Stem subterranean. Leaves 3 to 8, basal, terete, narrowly 4-grooved, 1-2 mm diam. Peduncles up to 4, angled, curved in fruit; outer bracts green with narrow, colourless or ± entirely black membranous margins, 20-30 mm long, closely and heavily ribbed (8 to 10 veins/mm), usually with stouter midvein in upper half, inner bracts 2-keeled with stouter veins on keels, with colourless or brown-flecked membranous margins. Flowers cup-shaped, shiny strawberry or claret-red with black blotch on pale greyish or purple background above yellow mark (sometimes with black median line) in throat, outer tepals with dark feathering on reverse; perianth tube bowl-shaped, 2-3 mm long; tepals obovate-cuneate, 25-40(-45) x 12-25 mm long. Filaments inserted at base of tube, 3-6 mm long, either oblong and longitudinally appressed or connate in stout cylindric collar, glabrous or pilose basally, blackish; anthers 10-15 mm long, apically joined at first, yellow or purplish with yellow pollen. Style dividing opposite base to middle of anthers, branches forked. Capsules oblong, 10-15 mm long. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. Cormous geophyte, mostly 50-100 mm tall, corm round at base, with curved acuminate teeth. Leaves 3-5, with 4 grooves, narrowly 4-grooved. Flowers dark red with black blotches at the edge of a creamy cup, filaments joined in a column; outer bracts keeled with narrow, dry, usually brown margins, inner bract 2-keeled, with dry brown margins; fruiting peduncles curved. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2013. Iridaceae. In: DA Snijman (ed.), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 2: The Extra Cape flora. Strelitzia 30: 94-124. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Flowers 30-45(-55) mm long, deep claret-red, each segment with a black blotch on a blue or purplish grey or sometimes pale yellow background. Filaments joined, forming a short, stout, shiny-black column; anthers 10-15 mm long. Style 8-12 mm long. From: De Vos, MP. 1983. Syringodea, Romulea. Fl. S. Africa 7(2,2): 1-76. Botanical Research Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The type and all subsequent collections from the Bokkeveld Plateau are diagnosed by the filaments fused into a stout, smooth, cylindric column, but collections from the Roggeveld have oblong, closely appressed but free filaments bearded basally. These populations may be confused with R. sabulosa, but that species has the filaments triangular in section and distinctly tapered above, and ± terete peduncles. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Very closely related to R. sabulosa. It is interfertile with R. sabulosa, the F1 hybrids resembling the latter in their free filaments (De Vos, I.e. 1970). Probably some specimens, distinguished as R. sabulosa, are hybrids. From: De Vos, MP. 1983. Syringodea, Romulea. Fl. S. Africa 7(2,2): 1-76. Botanical Research Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
