alien invasive

Morphological description

Tetrapygus niger has a round almost flattened test, purple in colour. It is 60mm in test diameter with strong, pointed dark brown to black spines (Branch et al., 2013).

Global distribution

T. niger occurs along the temperate Pacific coast from northern Peru to the Strait of Magellan (southern Chile) (Rodríguez and Fariña, 2001).

SA distribution

In 2007 a population of T. niger was recorded from a land-based aquaculture dam in Alexander Bay, a diamond- mining town on the west coast of South Africa (Haupt et al., 2010).

Movement

Small-sized individuals of T. niger are observed between the shallow 2m depth subtidal in June and 2.5m depth lower intertidal zones in September and November (Rodriguez and Ojeda, 1993).

Trophic strategy

Tetrapygus niger is a benthic grazer that has a broad diet which principally comprises of kelp, but also including algal turfs, encrusting coralline algae, drift algae, mussel recruits, and crustaceans (Hidalgo et al., 2013).

Reproduction

The shallower portions of the subtidal zone and probably the lower intertidal zone as well are important nursery areas for T. niger in Chile (Rodriguez and Ojeda, 1993).
