Habitat

Summer conditions are hot and relatively dry, with somewhat cooler, dry conditions in winter. In the Barberton area only one localized population of a few hundred bulbs has been recorded and in the Blyderivierspoort Nature Reserve dense colonies of several thousand bulbs occur in shade and semi-shade under weakly-developed gallery bush or arid bushveld in the transition between kloof forest and open rock ledges. The soil, which is usually covered by a layer of fallen leaves and humus, is a reddish sandy loam. Species composition in these communities is heterogeneous and includes a succulent component of Aloe sessiliflora Pole Evans, Crassula sp., Euphorbia cooperi N.E. Br. ex Berger, Pachy podium saundersii N.E. Br., Portulacaria afra Jacq. and Sansevieria aethiopica Thunb. From: Snijman, DA; Van Wyk, AE. 1993. Distribution

Haemanthus pauculifolius is known with certainty from only two localities on the Transvaal Drakensberg Escarpment: the Blyderivierspoort Nature Reserve (Swadini area) which lies within the rain shadow of the Mariepskop Mountain Complex closely situated to the east; and along the Mvoti highking trail near Barberton.
