Haworthia truncata Schonland var. truncata
Vulnerable Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Mostly growing solitary, rarely with basal offsets. Rosette: acaulescent, 25-40 x 10-15 mm large. Leaves: 7-12, fleshy, erect, with truncated leaf-ends, distichously arranged, 15-20 mm long, 10-15 mm broad, 3-4.5 mm thick. Leaf colour: dark green. Margins: none, because of their oval sectional area. End-areas: translucent, 10-15 x 3-4.5 mm large, containing some longish, withish, opaque structures. The whole leaf surface is covered with translucent, hairlike papillae, up to 1 mm long. From: Breuer, I. 2003. Beschreibung einiger neuer Haworthia-taxa. Avonia 21(3): 45-65. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. minor Breuer

Leaves 15 mm broad, 5 mm thick. From: Scott, CL. 1985. The genus Haworthia (Liliaceae): a taxonomic revision. Aloe Books, Johannesburg. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. tenuis (Poelln.) M.B.Bayer

Diagnostic description

So what makes them really different from the H. truncata-type besides the distinct locality? It is its small size! Even after years of greenhouse cultivation it remains small, and its inflorescence is smaller, too, with less flowers. From: Breuer, I. 2003. Beschreibung einiger neuer Haworthia-taxa. Avonia 21(3): 45-65. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. minor Breuer

Although superficially resembling var. truncata, and distributed more or less in the same area, the variety is readily distinguished by its proportionally thinner and consistently narrower leaves. From: Scott, CL. 1985. The genus Haworthia (Liliaceae): a taxonomic revision. Aloe Books, Johannesburg. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. tenuis (Poelln.) M.B.Bayer

Habitat

It occurs under more or less similar climatic conditions, mainly on stony hillsides near Oudtshoorn, but unlike the typical variety this form grows under stones, or occasionally between stones. It is difficult to detect in the wild, showing its presence only when in flower or seed. It prefers a firm hard soil with pH 6.5. From: Scott, CL. 1985. The genus Haworthia (Liliaceae): a taxonomic revision. Aloe Books, Johannesburg. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. tenuis (Poelln.) M.B.Bayer

Distribution

Apparently restricted to the Oudtshoorn District. From: Scott, CL. 1985. The genus Haworthia (Liliaceae): a taxonomic revision. Aloe Books, Johannesburg. [All rights reserved] As: Haworthia truncata Schonland var. tenuis (Poelln.) M.B.Bayer
