PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / CARYOPHYLLALES / AIZOACEAE / RUSCHIOIDEAE / RUSCHIEAE / CONOPHYTUM / MAUGHANII / LATUM
Plant as in subsp. maughanii but apex ± truncate, smaller than the base, rather translucent or nearly opaque, bright green or rarely always ruby-red, redness appearing in many green plants as they go dormant. Flower as in subsp. maughanii but petals shorter, milk-white to pale yellow or peach-pink. From: Hammer, SA. 2002. Dumpling and his Wife: New views of the genus Conophytum. EAE Creative Colour Ltd., Norwich. [All rights reserved]
It is best known from the Umdaus valley, where it is prolific, along with Lithops marmorata ‘umdausensis’. It also occurs en masse on firm stony flats in the vicinity of Eksteenfontein (Bolus’s O. noctifloruni), and in silty pockets at Klipbok. Red-skinned plants are completely absent in some populations and common in others, without any evident edaphic basis. Near Cone Peak, subsp. latum grows with C. hammeri, Monilaria sp., and C. herreanthus subsp. rex. From: Hammer, SA. 2002. Dumpling and his Wife: New views of the genus Conophytum.
