Morphological description

Perennial herbs, prostrate, acaulescent, rhizomes stout (up to ca. 6 cm in diameter), fleshy, forming mats or dense stands. Leaves prostrate, radiating from silky-wooly crown, either lying flat on the ground or arching upwards; blades elliptic, 2-30 x 0.4-3.5 cm, in larger leaves petiole-like base broadens to 2-3 cm where it meets the crown, margins deeply pinnatisect, lobes curving upwards, alternate, broad, diminishing in size toward proximal end, toothed, spiny; apices with 2 mm long spines; adaxial surface white tomentose when young, becoming a deep glossy green and glabrous with age, abaxial surface covered with dense white tomentum. Inflorescence sessile, ca. 3-20 heads grouped in a secondary head formed on the crown of the rhizome, secondary head 3-10 cm in diameter; heads varying in age. Heads discoid, subglobose, 10-25 mm in diameter, base of head fused to the crown surface and embedded within it. Involucral bracts, ca. 25-40, lanceolate to ovate or linear in 4-5 series; outer bracts broader at the base, 15-20 x 3-7 mm, straw colored, stiff, glabrous, entire, apices acuminate and reflexed, with 2 mm spiny tip; inner bracts becoming smaller and more slender and apex less stiff with innermost row resembling pales. Pales (receptacular bracts) linear, ca. 10-15 mm x < 1 mm overtopping the immature florets, ephemeral, soft, except for apex which is somewhat stiff, glabrous. Florets slender, ca. 20-60 (counted) or possibly up to 100 (estimated); corollas purple to pink-purple, fading with age, 20-23 mm long, tubes 14-17 x < 1 mm, sparsely hispid, throats 6.0-6.5 x 1-1.5 mm, glabrous, lobes 3.0-3.5 mm long, recurved and coiling under with glands on distal end of abaxial surface of lobe; stamens ca. 13 mm long, thecae 4-6 mm long, dark purple, subequally sagitate at base, apical appendages acute 1 mm long, filaments ca. 5-6 mm; styles lavender, 22-28 x < 1 mm, swollen area just below the style branches, very short stiff hairs from base of swollen area along back side of style branches all the way to the apex, style branches 3.5-5.0 mm, narrowing to a slender somewhat rounded apex. Achenes oblong, ca. 5 mm, white when immature turning dark, 5 sides of unequal widths, ribbed, glabrous. Pappus of 7-10 linear, persistent, white scales of varying lengths, 4-6 mm long, margins nearly entire, apex acuminate. From: Funk, VA; Koekemoer, M. 2011. A monograph of the small tribe Platycarpheae (Compositae: Cichorioideae). Syst. Bot. 36(1): 191-208. [All rights reserved]

Perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high; stemless, with stout, fleshy, underground runners. Leaves flat on ground, radiating from white, silky, woolly root crown, elliptic in outline; tapering to broad petiole-like base, pinnatisect; coarsely and deeply toothed, teeth spinose; cobwebby above at first, later glabrous; white-felted below. Capitula sessile, crowded; involucral bracts glumaceous, in few-many rows. Receptacle flat, paleate. Florets bisexual, fertile; corolla purple; tube widened above, glandular-hairy. Anthers with ovate to lanceolate, apical appendage. Style linear below, terete above; branches short, oblong. Pappus of narrow, acuminate scales. Cypselae ribbed, glabrous. Acaulescent perennial to 5 cm. Leaves prostrate, pinnatisect, lobes toothed and pungent, margins curving upward, glabrescent above, white-felted below. Flower heads discoid, crowded in a sessile, compound head, purple. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Asteraceae: Platycarpha Less. Diagnostic description

Platycarpha glomerata can be distinguished from other species in the tribe by its pinnatisect, spiny leaves, long corollas and long style branches, and its larger heads with a well-developed involucre. While all of the species of the tribe are prostrate, this one also has a tendency to be forced into a somewhat upright position especially when growing in crowded conditions. The size of the secondary head and leaves varies depending on the age of the plants and the amount of water available. On larger plants the younger leaves, which are just above the others, are smaller than the. older, lower leaves. From: Funk, VA; Koekemoer, M. 2011. A monograph of the small tribe Platycarpheae (Compositae: Cichorioideae). Syst. Bot. 36(1): 191-208. [All rights reserved]

Habitat

It is prevalent in rural, especially disturbed, areas and along dirt roads, growing in stony or sandy soils. In one town it is reported to line the sidewalks and creep into the lawns. From: Funk, VA; Koekemoer, M. 2011. A monograph of the small tribe Platycarpheae (Compositae: Cichorioideae). Syst. Bot. 36(1): 191-208. [All rights reserved]

Distribution

Platycarpha glomerata occurs in the eastern part of South Africa in inland areas of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape at elevations below 500 m. From: Funk, VA; Koekemoer, M. 2011.
