PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / SAXIFRAGALES / CRASSULACEAE / CRASSULOIDEAE / CRASSULA / COLUMNARIS / PROLIFERA
Plants with leaf column 10-20 mm in diameter, often much branched at base. Leaves mucronate and with dorsal ridge at least in young plants. Inflorescence usually borne well above leaves. Corolla 6-8 mm long. Squamae spathulate to T-shaped, 0.8-1 mm long. Carpels with broad styles scarcely distinguishable from ovaries and with broad stigmas; ovary with (14-)16-24 ovules each rarely longer than 0.1 mm. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Subsp. prolifera can be divided more or less clearly into a northern and a southern population, with the boundary between the two along the line between Soebatsfontein and Hondeklipbaai. The northern plants have an obvious dorsal ridge on the leaves, the inflorescences are usually partly hidden by the upper leaves, the axillary buds break off easily and a number of them are usually found established around the mother plant. In the southern plants the dorsal ridge on the leaves is scarcely visible, the inflorescence is usually branched well above the leaves and the axillary buds, if present, are usually produced at the flowering stage and form no abscission layer at their base. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Growing on gentle slopes or in depressions, often with quartzite gravel, rarely in shallow soil in rock crevices. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Found in south-western South West Africa/Namibia and north-western Cape Province, mainly between the Orange River and Vanrhynsdorp but also eastwards as far as Pofadder. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
