Bis 15 cm hoher, basal stark knorrig verholzter, ± stark verzweigter Zwergstrauch. Zweige graubraun [as graunbraun], locker langhaarig, die älteren Teile dicht mit den verbreiterten Blattbasen älterer Blätter besetzt, die jüngeren dicht beblättert. Blätter wechselständig, linealisch, bisweilen gegen die Spitze löffelig verbreitert, ± sukkulent, 1-2.5 cm lang, 0.5-1 mm breit, mit bis 1 mm breiter bleicher, randlich bewimperter, innen lange Wollhaare tragender Basis, gleichmässig locker langhaarig. Köpfchen gross, einzeln an bis zu 5 cm langen, mit einzelnen kurzen Hochblättern besetzten, lockerhaarigen unter den Köpfchen dichterhaarigen Pedunkeln. Involucrum ca. 4-reihig, bis 1.5 cm im Durchmesser. Hüllblätter dachig, 5 x 1 mm (aussen) bis 14 x 1.5 mm (innen), lanzettlich, grünlich, am Rand oft rötlich überlaufen, an der Spitze bewimpert, kaum hautrandig, die äusseren stärker, die inneren schwächer lockerhaarig. Zungenblüten immer fehlend. Scheibenblüten zahlreich. Krone gelb, bis 8 mm lang. Griffelanhängsel dreieckig. Pappusborsten zahlreich, persistent, verschieden lang, gelblich weiss, die langen bis 9 mm, kurz gezähnt, spitz zulaufend, die kurzen bis 1.5 mm, schmal borstig. Achänen 5 x 2 mm, obovat, rotbraun, mit schwach schuppiger Epidermis, Rand undeutlich abgehoben, lang seidig behaart, oft mit kahlem Streifen zwischen Rand und Fläche. From: Grau, HRJ. 1973. Roughly hairy, gnarled, dwarf shrublet, up to 150 mm tall. Leaves alternate, linear to linear-spathulate, succulent, hairy, woolly in axils, recurved at tips. F. macrorrhiza ist die einzige Sippe der Gattung mit constant discoiden Köpfchen. Sie gehört jedoch auf Grund der grossen, seidig behaarten Achänen, der zusätzlichen kurzen Pappusborsten und der wolligen Behaarung der Blattachseln eindeutig in den fruticosa-Formenkreis. Das zeitweilige Fehlen der Zungenblüten bei anderen Sippen dieser Gruppe, so etwa F. filifolia ssp. schaeferi und ssp. bodkinii sowie F. whitehillensis zeigt zudem, dass diese Tendenz hier relativ verbreitet ist und als charakteristisch betrachtet werden kann. F. macrorrhiza zeigt eine etwas von den näher verwandten Sippen abweichende Verbreitung. Vom westlichsten Fundort am Khamiesberg zieht sie nach Osten landeinwärts bis in die Gegend von Fraserburg.
