PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / ASTERALES / ASTERACEAE / ASTEROIDEAE / GNAPHALIEAE / IFLOGA / REPENS
Half-shrub, main branches of indefinite length, prostrate or decumbent, often rooting, indumentum thin, skin-like, glabrescent, or thinly tomentose on younger parts, flowering branchlets erect, mostly c. 20-100 mm tall, exceptionally to 250 mm, all closely leafy. Leaves fascicled, primary leaves 1-10 x 0.5 mm, linear-filiform, often slightly twisted, thick, ± keeled dorsally, apex acute or subacute, mucronulate, margins strongly involute, lower surface with thin tissue-paper-like indumentum, upper white tomentose, secondary leaves similar but shorter. Heads campanulate, c. 3 x 2 mm, usually crowded in dense terminal glomerules or short oblong racemes, occasionally more laxly set and then racemes longer, each head surrounded by a few leaves. Involucral bracts in c. 4 series, translucent golden brown or straw-coloured, outer sterile bracts and those subtending female flowers glabrous, obtuse or subacute, those surrounding hermaphrodite flowers glabrous or sparsely hairy on backs of stereomes, which become inflated, lamina obtuse or occasionally abruptly acute. Flowers 6-10; 1-3 female, corolla filiform, 4-8 hermaphrodite, corolla cylindric below, campanulate above. Achenes 1.25 mm long, obovate in outline, black, glabrous; ovaries aborted in hermaphrodite flowers. Pappus absent in female flowers, in hermaphrodite flowers with nearly smooth shaft becoming shortly plumose upwards. From: Hilliard, OM. 1981. A revision of Ifloga in southern Africa, with comments on the northern hemisphere species. Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 82: 293-312. [All rights reserved]
Like I. ambigua but main branches prostrate, bearing secund, short, erect flowering branches to 10 cm, terminating in tight, rounded clusters of flower heads. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Asteraceae: Ifloga Cass. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 390-391. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The salient features of I. repens are its prostrate main branches giving rise to numerous short erect flowering branchlets terminating in glomerules or short racemes (up to c. 30 mm long) of tightly clustered heads. Occasionally the heads are more laxly set, so that the racemes are much longer; it is then clear that each head is surrounded by only a few leaves, some of which are lightly webbed to the outer involucral bracts. This is in contrast to I. ambigua, in which the heads terminate dwarf branchlets, the many leaves of which are webbed to each other and to the outer involucral bracts. Ifloga repens may be confused with I. pilulifera. From: Hilliard, OM. 1981. A revision of Ifloga in southern Africa, with comments on the northern hemisphere species. Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 82: 293-312.
