Suffruticose or perennial plant, up to 1 m high, erect to decumbent, sometimes woody at base. Leaves alternate, linear-lanceolate or lanceolate, sessile, simple, elliptic, slightly succulent and margins entire to conspicuously dentate, crowded at ends of branches; lower branches quite hairless. Capitula up to 80 mm in diam.; borne singly or in a few groups at end of branches on short stalks (peduncles). Ray florets long, bright white on upper side and light blue or violet on lower side. Disc florets dark blue or purple. Flowering time Sept.-May. Cypselae of ray florets smooth, obovoid and triangular. From: Cron, GV; et al. 2019. Asteraceae. Sprawling, glabrescent, softly woody shrub, sometimes to 1.5 m. Leaves elliptic, mostly petiolate and toothed. Flower heads radiate, solitary on long peduncles, violet-blue with white rays. Ray achenes trigonous, ridged and rugose, disc florets sterile. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Asteraceae: Dimorphotheca Vaill. ex Moench. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 368-370. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
The ray flowers are white like alabaster above and violet-blue, striate and often bordered with white beneath. The disc is azure-blue, and the inner disc flowers have slightly gibbous corolla lobes. D. ecklonis is nearly related to D. fruticosa and D. acutifolia. It differs from the former species int. al. by its acutely triangular, usually reticulate-rugose achenes, by its narrower, never broadly obovate leaves, and by its habit of growth. It is distinguished from the latter species int. al. by its achenes, which are not bluntly triangular, and by its broader leaves. From: Norlindh, NT. 1943. Studies in the Calenduleae: 1. Monograph of the genera Dimorphotheca, Castalis, Osteospermum, Gibbaria & Chrysanthemoides. C.W.K. Gleerup, Lund. [All rights reserved]
