Branches punctate-scabrous; branchlets, petioles, and leaves quite glabrous; leaves petiolate; leaflets sessile, obovate-cuneiform, obtuse, mucronate, or sub-acute, sub-coriaceous, reticulate, paler or livid beneath, quite entire, with revolute margins; axillary panicles shorter than the leaves, terminal panicles longer and pyramidal; drupe globose, glabrous. Shrub erect; branches greyish or purple; branchlets short or virgate. Petiole 0.5 - 1 inch. Leaflets pale or livid beneath, the terminal one 1 - 1.5 inch long, 6 - 9 lines wide, rarely 2 inches long, 1 inch wide; larger and more cuneate than the lateral ones. Terminal panicle 2-4 inches long, pyramidal, glabrous; pedicels capillary, ultimate J-i line long. Flowers minute, whitish. Drupe the size of a small pea. From: Harvey, WH; Sonder, OW. 1860. Ranunculaceae to Connaraceae. Fl. Cap. (Harvey) 1: 1-546. Lovell Reeve & Co., London. [http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/15231#page/1/mode/1up] [All rights reserved] As: Rhus mucronata Thunb.
Much-branched, unarmed or somewhat spinous, multistemmed deciduous shrub generally 1-2.5 m high, often forming thickets. Bark smooth, grey-brown; young branches glabrous, chestnut brown. Leaves trifoliolate, petiolate; petiole semiterete, narrowly winged, shallowly canaliculate above, (4-)13(-32) mm long; leaflets sessile, subcoriaceous, concolorous, dark green above, slightly paler below, glabrous, hypostomatous; lamina widely obovate to occasionally lanceolate, base cuneate to attenuate, apex rarely retuse, generally rounded, obtuse or acute, mucronate; margin entire, slightly revolute; venation semicraspedodromous to reticulodromous, midrib and reticulation prominent above and below; terminal leaflets (7-)33(-67) x (4-)L5(-36) mm, lateral leaflets (6-)25(-53) x (3-)12(-28) mm. Panicles prominent, up to 60 mm long, fairly lax, glabrous, axillary and terminal. Flowers rarely bisexual, rarely 6-merous, corolla lobes relatively large, up to 2 mm long, styles free. Drupe circular, globoid, glabrous, shiny, dull yellow to reddish, drying brown, 5.1 x 4.8 to 5.3 x 4.9 mm. The plants lose their leaves in late winter and flowers appear before or with the new foliage in October but continue flowering until December, so that flowers and fruit are often found together on the same plant.
