Annual herb 75-150(220) mm tall, stem either simple or divaricately branched from the base or higher, glandular-pubescent, hairs up to 0.25(0.3) mm long, dwarf axillary shoots sometimes weakly developed. Leaves: lower leaves 7-22(14-38) x 0.5-2.5(0.75-4) mm, oblanceolate, entire or with 1-2 pairs of teeth, thinly glandular-pubescent on both surfaces, particularly margins and lower part; upper leaves 10-20(8-35) x 0.5-1.5[0.5-1 (-2)]mm, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, either entire or with 1 pair of teeth. Flowers 2-7(-10) in small terminal clusters becoming lax in fruit, pedicels 0.5-1 mm long. Bracts 5-7(5.5-13) x 0.4-0.75 mm, adnate almost to top of calyx, linear, entire, glandular-pubescent on both surfaces, hairs up to 0.25-0.3 mm long. Calyx 3.5-4.5(4-7.5) mm long, anticous lip shallowly lobed, posticous lobe c. 1 mm long, glandular-pubescent all over, hairs 0.25-0.3 mm long. Corolla tube7.5-10[9-13(-25)] x 0.75-1.25 mm, pubescent, limb 5-8[6.5-9(-11)] mm across, lobes oblong-elliptic, pos ticous ones 2-3.25(2.5-4.5) x 1-2(1.5-2.25) mm, anticous one 2-4(2.5-5) x 1-2(1.75-3) mm, all lobes white or cream [white, cream, pink, purple, both backs of lobes and tube often flushed purple], orange-yellow patch below posticous lip, bearded there, hairs often extending to the other 2 or 3 lobes. Stamens 4, anticous pair well exserted, anthers c. 0.75 mm long, posticous pair included, filaments decurrent nearly to base of tube, anthers in mouth, c. 1.25 mm long. Stigma exserted. Capsules 34.5(6) x 3(3-4) mm Seeds many, c. 1 mm long, distinctly 3-winged. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. Glandular-hairy annual to 20 cm. Leaves sometimes coarsely toothed. Flowers in small, terminal clusters, white or cream-coloured with orange patch below upper lobes, flushed purple on back, salver-shaped, tube hairy, 8-25 mm long. It is a small annual herb, well branched from the base, with long narrow leaves and 1-7-flowered heads that soon become lax, the flowers small (corolla tube up to 10 mm long, pubescent, limb 5-8 mm in diam.). Collector's notes are meagre, merely a cryptic 'white' and 'cream' on two sheets, but all the material has dried with both corolla tube and lobes self-coloured (apart from the usual orange patch in the throat). Measurements and other information in square brackets refer to a plant that has been included in a broad circumscription of P. gilioides. This plant ranges from about Piquetberg north to the Giftberg south west of Klawer (3118DC). It has mostly larger flowers (corolla tube 9-25 mm long, limb mostly 7-11 mm across the lateral lobes). Again, there is no precise information about the colour of the corolla: four collectors have merely recorded 'white', 'cream', 'pink', 'purple'. But in many instances, the backs of the corolla lobes or the corolla tube, sometimes both, have dried with a purplish flush. These plants may have been influenced by P. gracilis, here sympatric with P. gilioides sens, lat.: P. gracilis normally has a purple flush on the outside of the corolla. In the vicinity of Sauer, Hopefield, Ysterfontein and Darling, the influence may have come from P. lilacina. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae.
