A stout, erect, sparingly branched perennial herb up to 2.4 m tall, the base of the main stem exceptionally as much as 5 cm in diam., all parts rough-hairy. Leaves up to 20 x 7 cm, lanceolate in outline, lyrate-pinnatisect or pinnatisect, passing upwards into simple or dissected inflorescence bracts, the lobes oblong-lanceolate, coarsely and irregularly toothed, narrowed to a winged, petiole-like base decurrent on the stem in a broad wing. Heads broadly campanulate, up to 8 x 8 mm, many corymbosely arranged in large branching panicles. Involucral bracts lanceolate to ovate-elliptic, equalling the disc, gland-dotted, midline pilose and with immersed oil sacs, margins membranous. Flowers bright yellow. Achenes 3 mm long. Heads discoid, broadly campanulate, up to 8 x 8 mm, many, corymbosely arranged in large branching panicles. Involucral bracts 2- or 3-seriate, linear to narrowly ovate-elliptic, equalling disc florets, gland-dotted, midline pilose, with immersed oil sacs; outer with apices acute or subacute, margins membranous. Flowers: disc florets only, bright yellow; Jan., Feb. Fruit with cypsela elliptic to obovate, slightly compressed, usually 3-ribbed, pubescent, 3 mm long. Widespread in Lesotho, neighbouring mountainous parts of the Free State [Orange Free State], the face of the Drakensberg from Oliviershoek Pass near Harrismith to Underberg and Ngeli Mt. and Mt.
