PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / ASPARAGALES / AMARYLLIDACEAE / CYRTANTHEAE / CYRTANTHUS / FALCATUS
Bulb globose to ovoid [as 'avoid'], 5-8 cm in diam., budding freely from the base, contracted into a neck 8-12 cm long, densely covered with membranous tunics. Leaves usually 4, contemporary with flowers or produced during flowering periods, falcate, evenly narrowed to the apex, about 25 cm long, 2-3 cm broad, leathery. Peduncle 25-30 cm tall, recurved and somewhat flattened just below the umbel, making the whole umbel pendulous. Spathe-valves about 4, oblong- or linear-lanceolate, the largest up to 5 cm long and 1.25 cm broad. Pedicels about 1 cm long. Flowers 6-10 in an umbel, pendulous; perianth about 6 cm long, red, evenly dilated from the base to a throat about 1 cm wide; tube 4 cm long; lobes more or less obovate-oblong, about 2 cm long and 1.25 cm broad, the outer three with an indexed apiculus with a few hairs. Stamens uniseriate or very indistinctly biseriate, inserted at the throat of the perianth-tube; filaments exserted, about 1.25 cm long, bases extended into a sub-coronal ridge, sometimes with basal lobules. Ovary oblong, becoming oblong-elliptic. Style slightly shorter than the perianth, trifid. From: Reid, C; Dyer, RA. 1984. A review of the southern African species of Cyrtanthus. American Plant Life Society, La Jolla Stanford. [All rights reserved]
In the natural habitat the large bulbs hang down from vertical cliff faces. The peduncle curves upward so that it is erect, then at the apex bends sharply downward so that the entire umbel is pendulous. In cultivation, if the bulbs are planted erect, the peduncle retains the sharp bend below the umbel. Ising (1962) has shown that the karyotype differs from that of all other Cyrtanthus species: the long arm of chromosome C has a pronounced secondary constriction. From: Reid, C; Dyer, RA. 1984.
