Morphological description

Perennials or biennials with erect stems 3-10 mm hjgh, often with short axillary branches at base. Leaves transversely depressed-ovate, 3-12 x 10-25 mm, rounded, with dorsal ridge, rarely mucronate, tightly clasping and patelliform, often with membranous margins and usually with erect slightly recurved cilia, grey-green to brown. Inflorescence a terminal cymose capitulum, rarely a rounded thyrse more or less rudden by leaves below. Calyx: lobes elliptic-oblong, 3-4 mm long, rounded, with scattered marginal cilia, becoming more fleshy towards apex, green to brown. Corolla slender ampulliform, fused basally for 2.5-3.5 mm, white, pale yellow and often tinged red; lobes narrowly elliptic-oblong, 7-13 mm long with blunt beak. Stamens with yellow to brown anthers. Squamae spathulate to T-shaped, 0.8-2 x 0.8-1 mm, usually truncate, more or less abruptly constricted downwards into a stalk, fleshy and red above and stalk yellowish to almost membranous. Perennial or biennial herb, succulent, single stem, old leaves remaining on stem, ± 0.01 m long. Leaves transversely depressed-ovate, 5-10 x 10-25 mm, rounded with dorsal ridge, mucronate, tightly clasping and patelliform, margins membranous with cilia, grey-green to brown. Inflorescence a terminal, cymose capitulum or rounded thyrse, partly hidden by upper leaves; flowers sessile. Calyx fleshy towards apex, rounded, marginal cilia, green to brown.
