Diagnostic description

The small plants and cleistocarpic, pyriform capsules are distinctive and are diagnostic for the genus. Vegetatively the two Southern African species are very similar, although B. brevipes is slightly larger. The spores offer the only reliable characters for separating the species. From: Magill, RE. 1981. Ditrichaceae to Grimmiaceae. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S. Africa Bryophyta(1,1): 83-281. Botanical Research Institute, Department of Agriculture and Water Supply, Pretoria. Habitat

The plants grow on crusts of soil in association with Pleuridium and Fissidens. From: Magill, RE. 1981. Ditrichaceae to Grimmiaceae. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S. Africa Bryophyta(1,1): 83-281. Distribution
