Perennial dwarf shrub, up to 0.6 m high; stems erect, often well branched, often woody at base. Leaves mostly 7-20 x 1-2 mm, ± linear, entire or somewhat toothed, spreading. Flowers in spikes up to 200 mm long. Bracts broadly ovate, base broad, apex a short point. Corolla white or yellow with orange to purple fleck, sometimes all orange or brown; lobes of various lengths. Fruit broadly ellipsoid, the 2 parts unequal.
