PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / FABALES / POLYGALACEAE / POLYGALEAE / MURALTIA / BREVICORNU
An erect loosely branched glabrous shrub, 50-90 cm high. Branches very slender, grooved, the nodes widely separated. Leaves 2.0-5.0 mm long, erect, sessile, linear or linear-lanceolate, obtuse, shortly mucronate, flat above, rounded below. Flowers 3.0-4.5 mm long, pink, 1-4 in the axils of the leaves, pedicel shorter than the flower, cernuous in fruit. Bracts 0.5 mm long, orbicular, ciliate, the midrib prominent. Sepals broadly oblong, concave, very obtuse, glabrous, ciliate, the inner about half as long as the side petals. Side petals widest just below the middle, obtuse, somewhat longer than the carina. The claw of the carina as long as or slightly longer than the limb: the crest rather small, the width less than the length of the carina, the lower lobes slightly smaller than the upper, concrescent for some distance above the fold, projecting forward; both carina and crest often provided with small outgrowths. Ovary glabrous, bilobed at the apex; the style stout. Capsule glabrous, narrowly ovate, with 4 short sub-acute horns. Seed oblong, sparsely puberulous; the caruncle rather small, with two ribbon-like membranous flaps often extending below the base of the seed. From: Levyns, MRB. 1954. The genus Muraltia. J. S. African Bot.: 1-247. [CC BY]
