Morphological description

Small annual herb, branches several from the crown, c. 5-40 mm long, simple or subsimple, prostrate, nude. Leaves mostly crowded around the clusters of heads, c. 2-10 x 0.5-1 mm, linear-filiform, thick, ± keeled dorsally, apex subacute, mucronulate, margins strongly involute, lower surface with thin tissue-paper-like indumentum, upper white tomentose. Heads campanulate, c. 3 x 2 mm, many crowded in leafy glomerules c. 5-10 mm diameter terminating the branches, sometimes lateral also, sometimes coalescing into short dense racemes. Involucral bracts all translucent, whitish to pale golden brown, acute, those subtending female flowers thinly hairy on abaxial surfaces of stereomes, those surrounding hermaphrodite flowers more densely so. Flowers 5-10; 4-8 female, corollas filiform, 1-2 (-3) hermaphrodite, corollas cylindric below, campanulate above. Achenes 0.5 mm long, narrowly ovate in outline with elongate duplex hairs; ovaries aborted in hermaphrodite flowers. Pappus absent in female flowers, in hermaphrodite flowers with shaft nude below, shortly plumose in upper half. From: Hilliard, OM. 1981. Prostrate annual, branches 5-40 mm long, several from crown. Leaves crowded around flowerheads, linear-filiform, keeled, margins rolled in, white-tomentose above, disciform, many, in terminal leafy clusters; involucral bracts whitish to pale golden-brown, 4-8 outer florets filiform and female, 1 or 2(3) bisexual florets with sterile ovaries. Diagnostic description

Specimens from Namaqualand have very long hairs on the ovaries (often c. 10 times as long as broad); the only other specimens I have seen (Giess & van Vuuren 776 from Aus in S.W. Africa-Namibia, and Acocks 18961 from Wolwe Graafwater in Calvinia district, Cape) have shorter hairs, c. 3-4 times as long as broad, but I can find no other difference. Ifloga paronychioides can be confused with I. Candida; in addition to the characters given in the diagnosis below, I. Candida differs from I. paronychioides in the much shorter hairs on the ovaries; these are not much longer than broad. From: Hilliard, OM. 1981.
