ANIMALIA / CHORDATA / REPTILIA / SQUAMATA / GEKKONIDAE / LYGODACTYLUS / SOUTPANSBERGENSIS
Description is extracted from Branch (1998): This small species is similar to Lawrence's dwarf gecko, L. lawrencei. The large mental lacks lateral clefts. The rostral is in contact with the nostril and there are no soft spines above the eyes.Lygodactylus ocellatus soutpansbergensis differs from Lygodactylus ocellatus ocellatus in having a flatter, more pointed snout, three rather than two enlarged chin shields, 7 rather than 6 upper labials, and usually 8-9 preanal pores in males. Its colour is more variable, and the pale spots may be absent.
No separate diagnostic description was provided. Refer to the morphological description.
No data.
With the elevation of L. ocellatus soutpansbergensis to a full species (Travers et al., 2014), there are no further taxonomic issues (Tolley et al., 2023).
South Africa
This species occurs in the western and central Soutpansberg, northern Limpopo province, South Africa (Petford et al., 2019). Records of this species from the Blouberg (Bates et al., 2014; Bates and Branch, 2018b) are in error (Tolley et al., 2023).
Lygodactylus geckos have two adhesive toe pads (scansors) on the bottom of their feet to enable them to grip onto smooth surfaces and facilitate climbing. The tail also has modified scales at the tip that serve as the fifth scansor (Branch, 1998).
Carnivore - Insectivore (insect-eating)
Dwarf Geckos feed on ants and termites and can be seen stationed next to their traits, picking off victims (Branch, 1998).
This species is oviparous, laying two eggs in summer (Branch, 1998).
