As for subsp. fruticosus but young shoots with a white indumentum. Follicles mostly subtomentose and more attenuate than in subsp. fruticosus. From: Goyder, DJ; Nicholas, A. 2001. A revision of Gomphocarpus R.Br. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadaceae). Kew Bull. 56(4): 769-836. [http://www.jstor.org/stable/4119297] [All rights reserved]
Perennial herb or shrub, up to ± 1 m high, with fibrous roots and erect stems. Differs from the typical species in that young shoots have a white indumentum with fruit subtomentose and more attenuate, tapering abruptly into a long beak; Aug.-May. Fruit a follicle, echinate, with white hairs and dark longitudinal stripes. From: Bester, SP; Retief, E; Meyer, NL. 2017. Apocynaceae. In: E Retief & NL Meyer (eds), Plants of the Free State: Inventory and identification guide. Strelitzia 38: 213-248. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Perennial herb, 0.6-0.9 m high. Young parts of stem, peduncles and pedicels densely white tomentose. Leaves 9-10 times as long as broad, linear. Corolla lobes reflexed, ciliate on one or both margins. Corona lobes with backwardly directed falcate teeth at inner apical angles. Flowers white or pale yellowish tinted purplish outside. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Plants of the northern provinces of South Africa: Keys and diagnostic characters. Strelitzia 6: 1-681. National Botanical Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY] As: Asclepias decipiens N.E.Br.
G. fruticosus subsp. decipiens is easy to confuse with eastern populations of G. tomentosus but the presence of a falcate tooth on the upper margin of the corona lobe clearly argues for placement within G. fruticosus. Some material of G. tomentosus (e.g. Ngoni 501 & Leach & Noel 117, both from Botswana), show hints of a tooth, but this is never well developed. The follicle of subsp. decipiens is more abruptly tapered than in G. tomentosus. From: Goyder, DJ; Nicholas, A. 2001. A revision of Gomphocarpus R.Br. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadaceae). Kew Bull. 56(4): 769-836. [http://www.jstor.org/stable/4119297] [All rights reserved]
Dry sandy soils in open or disturbed places. From: Goyder, DJ; Nicholas, A. 2001. A revision of Gomphocarpus R.Br. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadaceae). Kew Bull. 56(4): 769-836. [http://www.jstor.org/stable/4119297] [All rights reserved]
Dry Grassland. Dry sandy soils in open or disturbed places. From: Bester, SP; Retief, E; Meyer, NL. 2017. Apocynaceae. In: E Retief & NL Meyer (eds), Plants of the Free State: Inventory and identification guide. Strelitzia 38: 213-248. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Rocky outcrops, sandy soil, often disturbed places e.g. roadsides.
Restricted to South Africa (N. Prov., Gauteng, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal) and Lesotho. From: Goyder, DJ; Nicholas, A. 2001. A revision of Gomphocarpus R.Br. (Apocynaceae: Asclepiadaceae). Kew Bull. 56(4): 769-836. [http://www.jstor.org/stable/4119297] [All rights reserved]
