Annual herb, stems 1 to many tufted from the base, 70-360 mm long, erect, simple below, often branching above into a cymose panicle, glandular-puberulous in lower part, hairs less than 0.1 mm long, occasionally with a few eglandular hairs to 0.2 mm as well, becoming glabrous to very sparsely glandular upwards, leafless. Leaves opposite, bases connate, crowded at base of plant, blade 8-33 x 4-18 mm, oblanceolate to elliptic or ovate tapering into a flat petiolar part 6-35 mm long (roughly equal to twice as long as blade) apex obtuse to subacute, margins entire to serrate, both surfaces glandular-puberulous, hairs up to 0.1 mm long, sessile glistening glands as well. Flowers many in terminal racemes, simple at first, later cymosely branched into lax panicles. Bracts (lowermost) 1-2.2 x 1-2 mm, ovate, acute. Pedicels (lowermost) 0.75-3(-5)mm long. Calyx obscurely bilabiate, tube 0.3-1 mm long, lobes 1.2-2 x 0.4-0.7 mm, oblong to subspathulate, margins minutely glandular-puberulous, occasional ± sessile glistening glands present, also on tube. Corolla tube 5-7 x 0.8-1 mm in throat, cylindric, inflated near apex, limb bilabiate, 6-10.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 3-6.5 x 0.75-1.1 mm, anticous lobe 2.8-5 x 0.7-1 mm, all lanceolate, acute, margins strongly revolute, varying from shades of yellow (cream, fawn, mustard yellow) to brown or reddish brown, the tube often blackish-violet on the posticous side (or rarely wholly dark violet) with a yellow to orange patch on the anticous side of the inflated part, usually glabrous outside, occasionally minutely and sparsely glandular, glistening glands on backs of lobes, inside either glabrous or with a posticous longitudinal band of clavate hairs, rarely flanked by two small lateral patches. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 0.4-0.5 mm long, tips visible in mouth, posticous anthers 0.7-1 mm long, included, posticous filaments bearded. Stigma 1.2-2 mm long, tip sometimes bifid, included. Style 0.6-1.2 mm long, much shorter than stigma. Ovary 1.3-2 x 0.6-1 mm. Capsules c. 3.5-6 x 2-3.3 mm. Seeds 0.5-1 x 0.3-0.5 mm, violet-blue. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. Manulea gariepina is widely distributed across southern Namibia, ranging from about Tiras in the west and Koes in the east south to the Orange river (the Gariep) thence into the Richtersveld in the Cape, south to the environs of Sprinkbok and Aalwynsfontein thence east in a broad band almost as far as Kimberley.
