Morphological description

Plants 60-150 mm high. Corm 10-15 mm diam.; tunics of fine, netted fibres. Stem up to 100 mm long, subterranean, branched. Leaves 6 to 9, mostly basal, linear to narrowly lanceolate, 40-120 x (1.5-)3.0-6.0 mm, with prominent main and secondary veins. Spike 1- or 2-flowered; bracts 25-60 mm long, membranous and pellucid, inner as long as or shorter than outer. Flowers bright yellow (rarely dull orange with yellow star in centre), outer tepals veined or flushed brownish purple beneath, unscented, opening midday and closing at dusk; perianth tube 40-80 mm long, ± 1 mm diam., occluded by style but widening gradually to 2 mm in upper 10 mm; tepals spreading, elliptic, 12-25 x 4-8 mm. Filaments 4-6 mm long; anthers 5-7 mm long, incurved apically, yellow. Ovary with stalk 1.5-15.0 mm long; style dividing opposite anthers, branches 3-6 mm long. Distribution

Scattered through central South Africa in the Vaal-Orange drainage basin, from Kimberley in Northern Cape to Mmbatho in Northwest and eastward to Kroonstad in Free State, with a recent unconfirmed sight record from Devon near Heidelberg in Gauteng of a population with dull orange flowers.
