PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / ASPARAGALES / IRIDACEAE / CROCOIDEAE / IXIEAE / BABIANA / PUBESCENS
Plants 60-100 mm high. Stem short, decumbent, rarely extended above ground, simple or 1- or 2-branched. Leaves crowded basally, abruptly truncate and wedge-shaped, lightly pleated, usually finely hairy. Spike congested, 6- to 10-flowered; bracts ± smooth to velvety, 20-38 mm long, inner slightly shorter than outer, forked apically. Flowers zygomorphic, blue to violet with white median marks often edged red on lower lateral tepals; perianth tube elongate, sharply bent below apex, ± 50 mm long; tepals unequal, dorsal largest and held somewhat apart, ± 20 mm long, lower tepals joined to upper laterals for short distance and to one another for ± 2 mm, forming a lip, 15-17 mm long. Stamens unilateral; filaments ± 15 mm long, well exserted from tube; anthers 6-7 mm long. Ovary smooth; style dividing opposite lower half of anthers; style ± 4 mm long. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Stemless, cormous geophyte, up to 80 mm tall, stem usually branching below ground. Leaves crowded basally, abruptly truncate, lightly pleated, usually finely hairy, exceeding the flowers. Flowers 6-10 in a decumbent spike, bilabiate, blue to mauve with white nectar guides, perianth tube elongate-cylindrical, ± 50 mm long, sharply bent near the apex, ovary smooth, bracts smooth or velvety, the inner forked apically. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2013. Iridaceae. In: DA Snijman (ed.), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 2: The Extra Cape flora. Strelitzia 30: 94-124. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Readily distinguished among the species with truncate leaves by the slender perianth tube, ± 50 mm long, sharply bent below the apex, and the relatively narrow tepals 15-20 mm long and 5-7 mm wide. Although said by Lewis (1959) to occur from Garies southward to Mierenkasteel (near Nuwerus) in southern Namaqualand, B. pubescens has only been reliably reported from Komaggas, southwest of Springbok, and in the vicinity of Garies. Despite being increasingly threatened by overgrazing and especially the heavy stocking of goats, B. pubescens remains relatively common locally. From: Goldblatt, P; Manning, JC. 2020. Iridaceae of southern Africa. Strelitzia 42: 1-1159. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
