Slender tufted perennial 170-570 mm high; rhizomes long, slender; basal sheaths fibrous. Leaf blade 30-45 x 1.0-2.5 mm. Inflorescence of 2-8 racemes, up to 80 mm long, not obviously secund. Spikelet 5-6 mm long; lower glume 3.4-5.1 mm long; upper glume ± as long as spikelet; lemma pilose on back, hairs not clavate, central nerve extending to an awn longer than the lemma; awn slender, straight; anther 1.8-2.0 mm long; upper sterile florets modified to form a tuft of awns.
