PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / LAMIALES / SCROPHULARIACEAE / SELAGINEAE / SELAGO / TRIQUETRA
Dwarf woody shrublet c. 150-300 mm tall (no basal parts seen), ± virgately very well branched, old stems bare, up to c. 6 mm in diam., young branchlets puberulous, hairs up to 0.1 mm long, ± patent, closely leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, not fascicled, largest 2-4.5 x 0.5-1 mm, mostly spreading to recurved (but may be appressed initially), linear or narrowly elliptic, apex obtuse, base scarcely narrowed, decurrent, margins entire, texture thick (leaf broadly elliptic in T.S.), venation invisible when leaf hydrated, midrib appearing raised on lower surface when dry, glandular-punctate, otherwise glabrous except on decurrent part. Inflorescence a solitary many-flowered rather lax spike c. 10-45 x 7 mm terminating innumerable leafy branchlets, not overtopped by subsidiary spikes. Bract adnate to base of calyx tube and minute pedicel when present, lowermost 2-3.7 x 0.6-0.8 mm, lanceolate, ± obtuse, glandular-punctate, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long on lower margins, back either glabrous or with a few minute hairs at base. Pedicel 0-0.1 mm. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, campanulate, 5-lobed roughly halfway to base, two anticous lobes slightly broader than other three, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins, 0.1-0.15 mm long all over outside together with minute globular glands, glabrous inside. Corolla tube (2.2-)3-4 mm long (female flowers not uncommon, then all parts smaller), funnel-shaped, limb 3-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-1.6 x 0.6-0.7 mm, anticous lobe 1.5-2.5 x 0.8-1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.4-2.3 mm long, anticous filaments 1.5-2.3 mm, all anthers well exserted. Stigma and style c. 3.2-4.8 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.6 x 0.3 mm, glabrous. Cocci 1.4-2 x 0.8-1 mm, red-brown, smooth, inner face plane, the pair of cocci held within the persistent calyx. From: Hilliard, OM. 1999. The Tribe Selagineae (Scrophulariaceae). The characteristic features of S. triquetra are its virgate branching and long narrow spikes solitary at the tips of innumerable branchlets; the inside of the calyx, the style and ovary are all glabrous. Selago valliscitri is similar in facies. From: Hilliard, OM. 1999. The Tribe Selagineae (Scrophulariaceae). Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
On both slopes and flats. Ecological information is scanty, but 'flats', 'rocky slopes', 'watercourses in Mt. Rhenosterveld' and the inevitable roadsides have all been mentioned.
