Morphological description

A sparsely-moderately branched, usually up to 0.5, sometimes up to 1 m high shrub. Stems ascending-erect, tomentose, leafy, becoming glabrous and nude and marked with leaf-scars. Leaves alternate, erect-spreading, flat-slightly canaliculate, straight or somewhat curved backwards, ± hard and rigid, distinctly 3-5-nerved, lanceolate or narrowly elliptic-oblong-elliptic-obovate, 8-22 mm long, 1-6 mm wide, glabrous or pilose-tomentose dorsally with margins pilose, glabrous above, acute, sometimes pungent. Capitula solitary, sessile, terminal. Involucre widely campanulate, 8-20 mm wide. Involucral bracts 30-75, outer ovate, inner gradually longer with an oblong basal part and an elliptic-ovate, spreading, brownish apical limb, innermost narrowly obovate-oblong, also with a narrowly oblong basal part and a narrowly elliptic, spreading, brownish apical limb, entire or apically laciniate, up to 15 mm long, up to 4.5 mm wide, acute-obtuse-rounded. Receptacle flat-convex, paleate. Paleae canaliculate and often winged dorsally, subulate, 7-11.5 mm long, 0.3-0.8 mm wide, acute-acuminate, persistent. Ray-florets 15-40. Tube somewhat triquetrous, 3-5 mm long, with laterally and dorsally ± densely scattered, subulate-triangular hairs. Lamina narrowly elliptic-oblong, 8.5-14 mm long, 1.6-2.9 mm wide, 4- or occasionally 5-6-veined. Style 4-6.5 mm long; style-branches 0.7-3 mm long, glabrous or dorsally and apically very minutely pilose-penicillate. Achenes triquetrous with inner edge often winged, elliptic-oblong, 2.4-3.5 mm long, 0.7-1.3 mm wide, shortly hispid-pilose with longer hairs on lateral ribs, ribs and ends yellowish brown, centre brown; pappus as in disc-florets. Disc-florets 50-250, perfect. Corolla narrowly cylindrical-funnel-shaped, indistinctly divided into tube and limb, 5-8 mm long, 0.8-1.2 mm wide; corolla lobes 0.4-0.8 mm long, dorsally occasionally gland-dotted. Style 5-9 mm long; style-branches 0.9-2.4 mm long, dorsally and apically minutely pilose-penicillate, obtuse; stylopodium ± distinct. Anthers 2.5-.8 mm long; tails entire or slightly branched, c. 1/4 of the length of the anther. Achenes flat with inner edge often winged, elliptic-oblong, 2.2-3.5 mm long, 0.6-1.3 mm wide, glabrous or pilose mainly on inner edge and with occasional scattered hairs, lateral ribs and ends yellowish brown, centre brown; pappus crownlike, of ± connate scales, up to 2 mm long. Sparsely branched shrub, 0.3-0.5(-1.0) m high. Leaves alternate, erect-spreading, flat to slightly canaliculate, hard and rigid, distinctly 3-5-nerved, lanceolate, 8-22 mm long, glabrous or pilose, acute to pungent. Capitula solitary, sessile; involucre widely campanulate, 8-20 mm wide; involucral bracts 30-75, outer ovate, inner gradually longer, spreading. Receptacle paleate, paleae 7.0-11.5 mm long, acute, persistent. Diagnostic description

R. calycina belongs to a group of species with many-nerved leaves and rather large capitula. It is related to R. speciosa, but is not as large-flowered and broad-leaved as that species. R. calycina extends over a considerable area and varies along its distribution range. I have found a recognition of three subspecies to be justified. The differences between these three subspecies are not as clear-cut as the above descriptions might suggest and there are specimens more or less intermediate between ssp. apiculata and ssp. calycina from the area north and west of George. Consists of small shrubs with smaller, lanceolate leaves, which are often slightly curved backwards and pungent. The indumentum is variable, but similar to that of ssp. calycina. Distribution

R. calycina extends all the way from Cedarbergen to Albany and the three subspecies occupies different habitats in their different areas. Ssp. apiculata prefers stony and rocky mountain slopes often at high altitude. Ssp. calycina grows on lower slopes in stony or sometimes clayey soil. From Swartberg Pass there are collections both of ssp. apiculata and ssp. calycina. It is apparent, however, that the former subspecies grows on higher altitudes and the latter on the lower slopes of the mountain.
