Erect shrub up to 45 cm (1 1/2 ft) or so, sparingly branched and glabrous except where otherwise stated. Branches virgate, densely leafy. Leaves 6-iomm long, scattered, not whorled, erect to spreading, densely imbricate, linear, obtuse, sulcate, slender and long-petioled. Flowers terminal or sublateral at the ends of the branches, umbellate; peduncles 8-16 mm long, spreading, viscid; bracts median, foliaceous. Sepals 1-1.5 mm long, ovate-oblong, keeled, somewhat laxly set, concave, thick, viscid. Corolla 7-8 mm long, ovoid-urceolate, contracted at the throat, thick, viscid, glabrous or sometimes minutely hispidulous in the upper part, reddish-purple to purple; lobes large, 1/3-1/2 the length of the tube, subspreading, viscid. Filaments dilated at the apex; anthers included, 1.3-2 mm long, lateral, linear-cuneate or semiovate, acute, smooth, appendiculate; pore 1/2-2/3 the length of the cell; crests semi-orbicular, coarsely dentate, about 1/2 the length of the cell. E. obliqua is closely related to E. macroloma Benth. which occurs in the same areas in the Caledon District. Acock's Veld Type, Fynbos vegetation. Occasional. Evergreen perennial erect shrub, height 0.52 m. Flowers purple. Fruit brown. Long stem, then branching and rebranching, leaves alternate, linear, serrate, with glands, closely packed on stem, spirally arranged, flat above and channelled below, inflated at tip of stem, calyx green.
