Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Annual herb, (6.5-)12-30 cm high, branching mainly near base; stems thinly cobwebby at first, later glabrescent. Leaves alternate, mainly basal, lower ones withering early, oblanceolate, 20-70 x 5-30 mm, narrowing to petiole-like base, thinly cobwebby at first, especially in axils, later nearly glabrous, lower leaves oblanceolate to elliptic, becoming more deeply divided to pinnatifid towards apex, lobes coarsely dentate, upper leaves pinnatisect with lobes oblong and coarsely dentate. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, solitary on peduncles 45-175 mm long, sparsely bracteate. Involucre campanulate, ecalyculate, 6-13 mm diam.; involucral bracts uniseriate, 10-13, narrowly oblong-ovate, 6.0-8.5 mm long, acute, striate, with scarious margins, ciliate-puberulous at tips, 3-5-veined. Receptacle flat, punctate, glabrous. Ray florets female, (5-)8-10, yellow, tube cylindrical, 2.2-4.0 mm long, glandular hairy, limb deflexed-spreading, ellipticoblong, usually 5-veined, 9-12 x 2.5-3.0 mm. Ovary narrowly obovoid, triangular in transverse section, outer (biaxial) face largest, convex, densely adpressed hairy, inner faces narrower, glabrous but separated by an adpressed hairy ridge; style terete with slightly swollen base on a distinct stylopodium, branches with discrete lateral stigmatic areas, apices narrowly obovate and shortly papillate. Disc florets bisexual, numerous, (4-)5-7 mm long yellow; tube cylindrical; limb obconical, 5-lobed, lobes narrowly triangular, 1.5-2.0 x 0.8 mm, with submarginal veins and median resin duct. Stamens: anthers 2.2-3.0 mm long including ovate, keeled apical appendage; anther base minutely sagittate; filament collar balusterform (dilated towards base). Ovary narrowly obovoid, densely adpressed-hairy; ovary wall crystals rhomboidal; style terete with swollen base on distinct stylopodium, style branches with discrete marginal stigmatic areas, apices shortly conical with few central sweeping hairs (papillae), fringed by ring of papillae. Cypselas heteromorphic: ray cypselas narrowly ellipsoid to fusiform, dark brown to black when mature, arcuate, triangular in cross section, densely covered with adpressed, white, myxogenic twin hairs, inner faces narrower, glabrous but with median inner ridge also hairy, 4-5 mm long; disc cypselas fusiform when mature, 3-or 4-angled in cross section, black, densely covered with white myxogenic hairs, 4-5 mm long. Pappus pluriseriate, numerous, white, barbellate, connate at base into short collar, persistent, 4-5 mm long. From: Cron, GV. 2013. Glabrescent annual, 150-300 mm tall, branching from base. Leaves mainly basal, oblanceolate, 30-70 x 6-30 mm, papillate-scabridulous, lower leaves coarsely dentate, upper leaves becoming pinnatifid to pinnatisect. Flowerheads radiate, solitary on long, sparsely bracteolate peduncles, yellow; involucre 6-10 mm diam., of 10-13 bracts, glabrous but apically puberulous. From: Manning, JC. 2013. Asteraceae: Emilia. Diagnostic description

Allied to Bolandia, as evident in the shape and colour of the dimorphic cypselas, but the apices of the style branches of the disc florets are conical, not truncate, and the inner ridge of the ray cypselas is covered with short white hairs, and its habit is annual.
