Morphological description

Annual herb, up to 2 m high. Leaves lanceolate to elliptic, margins entire or toothed. Lateral branches never overtopping main axis, the whole forming a pyramidal compound inflorescence. Heads less than 10 mm in diameter, pappus straw-coloured. Flowers greenish white, greenish yellow, yellowish or whitish. From: Retief, E; Herman, PPJ. 1997. Erect, roughly hairy annual herb up to 2 m tall, stems very leafy, usually simple below, branching above into the compound inflorescence, these lateral branches never overtopping the main axis, the whole forming a pyramidal compound inflorescence. Leaves sessile, up to 10 x 1.5 cm, lanceolate to elliptic, margins entire or toothed. Heads many, usually less than 1 cm across when pressed. Involucral bracts in c. 3 series, lanceolate, acuminate, dark with pale scarious margins, midline with immersed oil sacs, pilose. Achenes c. 1.25 mm long, narrowly elliptic, compressed, thinly hairy, margins thickened. Pappus of straw-coloured scabridulous bristles. From: Hilliard, OM. 1977. Compositae in Natal. Univ. Diagnostic description

Often found with C. bonariensis and C. canadensis and easily distinguished from the first by its pyramidal inflorescence in which the lateral branches never equal or overtop the main axis, and from the second by its wanting ray flowers.
