Morphological description

Rootstock producing a small tuber. Tuber ±25 mm diam., often with adventitious ones developing at random at nodes along branches. Stems perennial from base or possibly sometimes annual in the wild, slender, pendent, prostrate, trailing or climbing, glabrous, 25-100 mm long(indefinite in cultivation). Leaves fleshy, petiolate; petiole 3-10 mm long; blade 6-18 mm long and broad or narrower and ovate-lanceolate, typically with cordate base, whitish-variegated along veins above or sometimes uniform green. Cymes 1-few-flowered; peduncles up to 15 mm long; pedicels up to 10 mm long. Sepals narrowly lanceolate, ±2 mm long. Corolla 18-25 mm long, pinkish on tube with dark striations to base and lobes with blackish margins; tube globosely inflated at base to ±4 mm diam., contracted to 2 mm diam. above and expanded to mouth with spread of base of lobes broader than spread of upper cage, glabrous; lobes 6-7 mm long, narrowly spathulate from deltoid base, replicate, forming oblong cage with projecting sinuses and obtuse apex, with long, simple (becoming crinkled), purple hairs from inside. Corona white, shortly united at base, forming 5 shallow pockets with entire outer margin confluent with bade of inner lobes; inner lobes 2-2.5 mm long, spathulate-lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, connivent-erect, recurving at tips. Follicles linear-terete, diverging, 50-70 mm long, slender, smooth, glabrous; seeds ±5 mm long, broadly margined, smooth brown. From: Dyer, RA. 1980. Asclepiadaceae. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S. Diagnostic description

M. B. Bayer 745 and KG 162/73 were collected somewhat east of Hankey on the eastern Cape border. They are related to C. cancellata and C. woodii. They differ from the former in their subspathulate corolla lobes and show variability in their coronal structure: seed of the glabrous No. 745 produced pubescent seedlings and there was colour variation from the basic yellow. From: Dyer, RA. 1980. Asclepiadaceae. In: OA Leistner (ed.). Fl. S. Africa 27(4): 1-88. [CC BY] As: Ceropegia woodii Schltr.

Habitat
