PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / LAMIALES / SCROPHULARIACEAE / LIMOSELLEAE / ZALUZIANSKYA / MARITIMA
Herb mostly 100-300 mm high, annual or sometimes persisting for more than one season, taproot becoming woody, rarely exceeding 4 mm diam., stem simple or branched from the base, clad in retrorse white hairs, leafy, often with axillary leaf tufts. Leaves mostly 15-45(-70) x (3-)4-8 mm, spreading, elliptic, base tapered, apex obtuse to subacute, margins entire or with a few small callose teeth, often somewhat flashy, nearly glabrous or with coarse hairs on the margins and midline below. Flowers several to many in a crowded head, (sometimes elongating in fruit) opening at dusk or in dull light and then sweetly scented. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2.54 mm, resembling the leaves but often shorter and broader. Calyx 8-14 mm long, lips 4-7 mm long, glabrous except for hairs on margins, and occasionally a few on keels. Corolla tube 25-50 mm long, pubescent, hairs usually glandular, up to 0.1-0.5 mm long, rarely with few to many eglandular hairs as well, 0.4-0.7 mm long, limb held horizontally, regular; mouth with circlet of long unicellular hairs; lobes 5-9 mm long, deeply notched, crimson and glandular-puberulous outside, white inside, eglandular or with a few glandular hairs near the base. Stamens 4, anticous anthers 1.4-1.8 mm long, shortly exserted, 2 posticous ones included, 2.8-3.8 mm long. Capsule 10-14 x 4-5 mm. Seeds c. 1-1.3 x 1 mm, angled, colliculate, pallid. Flowering in any month. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
Annual or sometimes perennial herb, up to 300 mm high; stem or branches often with leaf tufts. Leaves elliptic, spreading, somewhat fleshy. Flowers few to many in a dense head, sometimes lengthening in fruit. Corolla: tube up to 50 mm long; limb regular; mouth with ring of long hairs. Flowering time all year. Annual or short-lived perennial, stems with retrorse hairs. Leaves often fleshy, nearly glabrous. Flowers in a crowded head, tube 25-50 mm long, lobes deeply notched, white inside and crimson outside, opening at dusk and then scented, stamens 4. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Scrophulariaceae: Zaluzianskya F.W.Schmidt. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 762-763. Zaluzianskya maritima is characterized by its thin woody taproot, branching habit, and spreading leaves. It is essentially annual and will flower when still single-stemmed. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
Its preferred habitat is the foreshore, along the seaward margin of dune scrub, but it will also grow on sandy grassy slopes overlooking the sea. Its relationship lies with Z. capensis, also an annual that may grow on littoral dunes, but its thin herbaceous leaves, often with toothed margins, will distinguish it from Z. maritima, which usually has thick almost or quite entire leaves.
