Morphological description

Stems 10-100(-150) mm long, 6-22 mm thick, rarely somewhat rhizomatous. Corolla 16-35 mm diam.; inside red-brown to nearly black, with hair-like papillae 0.2-1.0 mm long variably present mainly on annulus; annulus 1.2-5.0 mm tall, 5.5-11 mm broad; lobes with margins sometimes ciliate. Perennial, dwarf succulent. Stems sometimes rhizomatous, decumbent, ovoid to cylindrical, 15-100(-150) x 6-22 mm, glabrous, dark green, 4- or 5-angled with rows of conical teeth tipped with 1.5-2.0 mm long leaf rudiment. Flowers 1-3(-9); pedicels 10-25 mm long. Sepals 3-6 mm long. Corolla 18-35 mm in diam., reddish brown to almost black; annulus prominent, circular to pentagonal, 6-12 mm in diam., sometimes with hair-like papillae; lobes spreading, 9-15 x 3-9 mm, ± completely replicate, clavate vibratile hairs sometimes present. Corona 4.5-7.0 mm in diam.; outer lobes reddish brown to purple, spreading into a ± pentagonal disc; inner lobes yellowish, 0.5-2.2 mm long with apices extended into obtuse, ascending, dorsal lobules. Perennial herb, 15-130 x 10-22 mm. Stems succulent; clustered; cylindrical, 4- or 5-angled; dark green. Leaves rudimentary, ± 2 mm long. Flowers: inflorescence with 1-few flowers near stem base; 20-35 mm wide, with strong foetid odour; corona yellow to reddish brown, maroon, dark brown to purple-brown; outer corona ± level or slightly above top of annulus; annulus circular to pentagonal, > 1.5 mm high, with papillae ± 1.5 mm long; corolla 0.2-0.4 x 18-30(-35) mm long, lobes almost entirely reflexed, with hairs basally or all over; Aug.-Jun. Distribution

Subsp. caespitosa is found in most suitably dry habitats in the Western Cape from southern Namaqualand to the Worcester-Robertson Karoo, the Ceres Karoo, Little Karoo and the Great Karoo as far east as Graaff-Reinet, Fort Beaufort and Grahamstown.
