Polycarena aurea Benth.
LC Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Annual herb 40-150(-300) mm tall, stems simple or branched either from the base or in the upper half, shortly glandular-pubescent with an admixture of longer hairs c. 0.4 mm long. Leaves mainly 5-29 x 0.5-4 mm, diminishing in size upwards, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, entire or with 1 or 2 pairs of obscure teeth, both surfaces glandular-pubescent. Flowers few to many in small terminal heads, elongating slightly in fruit but flowers always crowded, pedicels 0.5-2 mm long. Bracts 2.5-7.5 x 0.4-3 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic, adnate roughly halfway up calyx tube (0.5-1.5 mm), glandular-pubescent mainly on the backs, hairs 0.25-0.4 mm long. Calyx 2.5-4 mm long, anticous lobes very short, posticous ones c. 1 mm long, glandular-pubescent particularly on the greenish keels, hairs up to 0.25-0.4 mm long. Corolla tube 3-5.5 x 1-1.75 mm, glabrous, limb 6-9.5 mm across, lobes elliptic, posticous ones 1.3-3 x 0.75-2 mm, anticous ones 1.75-4.5 x 1.25-2.5 mm, limb either wholly yellow or upper lip white tipped yellow, lower white, posticous lip either glabrous or with a few hairs on the palate. Stamens all well exserted, anthers 1 mm long, posticous filaments decurrent to base of tube. Stigma exserted. Capsule 2.5-3.5 x 2-3 mm Seeds many, c. 1 mm long, either distinctly or obscurely 3-winged. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. Shortly glandular-hairy annual, up to 200 mm tall. Leaves narrow and sparsely toothed. Flowers in small, rounded, terminal heads, corolla tube 3-3.5 mm long, glabrous, entirely yellow or white with upper lip tipped with yellow. From: Snijman, DA. 2013. Scrophulariaceae: Polycarena. Shortly glandular-hairy annual to 20 cm. Leaves narrow and sparsely toothed. Flowers in small, terminal heads, yellow or upper lip white tipped yellow, tube short and glabrous, 3-6 mm long. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Scrophulariaceae: Polycarena Benth. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Diagnostic description

In the southern part of its range, the flowers are wholly yellow. Around Middelpost and south east of it (3120CC and 3220AB) the flowers may be either wholly yellow or the limb may be white with only the tips of the posticous lobes tipped with yellow. Polycarena aurea is easily distinguished from P. pubescens, with which it is partly sympatric, by its larger limb (6-9.5 mm versus 3-5 mm), upper lip glabrous or very nearly so (not well bearded) and shorter indumentum (hairs on stem, bract and calyx up to 0.25-0.4 mm, versus 0.5-1 mm). It is distinguished from P. formosa by its shorter indumentum (longer hairs 0.25-4 mm versus 0.6-1.2 mm), leaves only obscurely toothed, differently shaped bracts (elliptic versus linear to oblong) adnate roughly halfway up the calyx tube (not nearly to the top) and often shorter - corolla tube (3-5.5 mm versus 5-6.5 mm). The area of P. aurea lies mainly west and south of ' that of P. formosa; they appear to be sympatric only in the neighbourhood of Niewoudtville. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]

Habitat

The plants grow on sandy or clayey flats and slopes, often among shrubs. From: Hilliard, OM. 1994. The Manuleae: a tribe of Scrophulariaceae. Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh. [All rights reserved]
