Morphological description

Stems 17-52 cm tall, crispate-pubescent. Leaves crowded and irregularly inserted on lower, non-flowering part of stem, verticillate at flowering nodes with internodes up to 20 mm long; leaves at flowering nodes not reduced in size. Leaf-lamina 30-37 x 1-3 mm, subsessile, glabrous. Flowers in fascicles of 3-4 at distal 6-8 nodes; pedicels up to 8 mm long; flower colour described as green. Calyx segments 4-4.5 x 1-1.5 mm, dorsally pilose, ventrally glabrous. Corolla lobes 6-6.5 x 3 mm, convex and reflexed at anthesis; dorsal surface appressed pubescent with brownish hairs. Corona 4.5-5 mm high (including processes), the lobes basically similar in shape to those of M. anomalum but developed to resemble the head of an African elephant, the apex being prolonged into a slender upturned 'trunk' and the lateral concavities deepened and widened into 'ears'. Anther appendages 0.8 mm long, ± flat; corpusculum 0.35-0.43 mm long; pollinium 0.85 mm long. Mature fruit unknown; young fruit bristly and densely yellowish lanate. From: Kupicha, FK. 1984.
