Corm ovoid, 1-1.5(-2) cm long, 0.8-2 cm wide, with firm black tunics. Stem above ground 5-20 cm high. Leaves 3, suberect to erecto-patent or sometimes curved-spreading, narrowly lanceolate, (4-)8-20 cm long, 0.3-1 cm wide, usually much attenuate and overtopping the spike. Spike moderately to fairly dense, 8-40-flowered, (2-)4-12 cm long, 6-10 mm wide. Perianth ca. 1 cm in diam., dark mauve-reddish brown-deep red-brownish or deep purple. Tube broadly oblong, 2-3 mm long, 1.7-3 mm wide, with subcalcarate base. Segments soon spreading and finally recurved-reflexed, ovate-narrowly triangular-lanceolate, 3^t.5 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide at the base, obtuse-subacute. Nectary a shallow or indistinct longitudinal groove above the filament base. Filaments subulate, 0.7-1.3 mm long, brown or ± purple. Anthers oblong or elliptic-oblong, 0.6-1.2 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, bright yellow. Ovary oblong, somewhat triquetrous, 2-2.5 mm long excl. styles; free styles subulate, suberect or somewhat curved, 2.5-3 mm long, brown-purple. Mature capsule and seeds not seen. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1986. The genus Wurmbea (Colchicaceae) in the Cape region. Opera Bot. 87: 5-41. [All rights reserved]
Cormous geophyte, 5-20 cm. Leaves narrowly lanceolate. Flowers red to purplish brown, tepals recurved, tube shorter than tepals, 2-3 mm long, filaments very short. From: Manning, JC; Goldblatt, P. 2012. Colchicaceae. In: J Manning & P Goldblatt (eds), Plants of the Greater Cape Floristic Region 1: The Core Cape flora. Strelitzia 29: 80-83. South African National Biodiversity Institute, Pretoria. [CC BY]
Clearly allied to W. marginata, with which it shares the red or deep purple perianth with contrasting yellow anthers. The spike is narrower, however, due to the smaller perianth with shorter and re-flexed segments. There is some variation in flower colour, from deep purple or red to a lighter brownish tinge. The light colour in some forms may be due to introgression from other species, such as W. inusta, which apparently hybridizes with W. recurva, occasionally forming hybrid swarms. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1986. The genus Wurmbea (Colchicaceae) in the Cape region. Opera Bot. 87: 5-41. [All rights reserved]
Sandy, gravelly or clayey soil on flats and hillslopes, sometimes on recently burnt ground. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1986. The genus Wurmbea (Colchicaceae) in the Cape region. Opera Bot. 87: 5-41. [All rights reserved]
A restricted range in the southwestern Cape, almost exclusively in areas not inhabited by the related species W. marginata. From: Nordenstam, RB. 1986. The genus Wurmbea (Colchicaceae) in the Cape region. Opera Bot. 87: 5-41. [All rights reserved]
