PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / LAMIALES / LENTIBULARIACEAE / UTRICULARIA / REFLEXA
Small to medium sized, suspended aquatic, sometimes perennating by pyriform tubers formed at the apex of the stolons. Rhizoids sometimes present, capillary, a few mm long, 0.1-0.2 mm thick, bearing clusters of minute, ellipsoid, apically setulose branches. Stolons filiform to relatively thick and fleshy, 5-50 cm long, 0.3-3 mm thick, sparsely branched, terete, glabrous or ± covered with simple and stellate hairs, the internodes 0.2-1(-1.5) cm long. Leaves very numerous, approximately circular in outline, 0.3-3 cm long, divided from the base into 2-5 primary segments, each dichotomously divided into further segments, the ultimate segments capillary, terete, laterally and apically setulose. Traps inserted in the angle between the primary and subsequent segments, very variable in number and size, obliquely ovoid, shortly stalked, 1-6 mm long, the mouth lateral with 2 simple to copiously branched, setiform, dorsal appendages and often also with further simple, ventral setae, the internal glands 2- and 4-armed, the arms very narrowly cylindrical, with apex acute, up to 140 µ long and up to 30 times as long as wide, the quadrifids with the longer pair divergent with an included angle of c. 40°, the shorter pair reflexed with an included angle of c. 320°. Inflorescence erect or sometimes twining, emergent, 1.5-18 cm long, arising at intervals of 3 cm or more from the stolons; peduncle filiform, terete, glabrous or sometimes basally hairy, 0.5-0.8 mm thick. Scales absent. Bracts basifixed, amplexicaul, approximately circular or transversely oblong, with apex rounded or truncate, 1-3 mm long. Bracteoles absent. Flowers 1-4, the raceme axis elongate; pedicels filiform, erect at anthesis, usually deflexed or decurved in fruit, 0.2-3.5 cm long. Calyx lobes subequal, the lower lobe often broader, ovate, 1-3 mm long, with apex of upper lobe obtuse and of lower lobe emarginate. Corolla 0.3-1.5 cm long, yellow, usually with brown or purplish nerves, ± densely covered on the outer surface with fine short multicellular hairs, very rarely glabrous; upper lip ovate or circular, with apex rounded or emarginate; lower lip limb transversely oblong or subreniform, the base with a rather prominent, bilobed swelling, the apex rounded or truncate, entire or more usually emarginate to ± distinctly 2-lobed; palate densely hairy; spur approximately cylindrical, with apex obtuse or truncate, straight or slightly curved, about as long as the lower lip. Filaments curved, 1-1.5 mm long, the anther thecae ± confluent. Ovary globose; style short but distinct; stigma lower lip semicircular, ciliate, the upper lip much smaller or obsolete. Capsule globose, 2-4 mm in diameter, the wall rather fleshy, circumscissile. Seeds disc-shaped, 0.4-0.8 mm in diameter and about 2-3 times as wide as thick, ± angular, the angles usually narrowly winged, the testa cells elongate with the anticlinal boundaries much raised, ± straight, the periclinal walls concave, smooth, with a few transverse ridges which are extended up the sides of the anticlinal walls.
