Stigma abortive, 1.3 mm long, entire, clavate, acting as a pollen presenter. Style 3.8 mm long, filiform glabrous, narrower above. Hypogynous scales 1.3 mm long, linear, stout Nectar seen at the apices of the hypogynous scales. Receptacle 1.1 cm long 3.2 mm diam., narrowly clavate. Female inflorescence 1.2 cm long, 9 mfi diam., solitary, terminal, ovoid, with the florets in 8 spirals of 5 or 15 cm each giving off a yeasty smell. L. lanigerum var. laevigatum is very closely related to L. lanigerum Meisn. from Malmesbury and Paarl divisions but differs in having a single stem at ground level, tall and not short, with longer leaves that are somewhat mor smooth and less hairy. It is a very much larger shrub than L. modestum Williams from the Caledon and Bredasdorp divisions. Red flowers ar occasionally found in in var. laevigatum, but never in typical L. lanigerum or i L. modestum. From: Williams, IJM. 1972. A revision of the genus Leucadendron (Proteaceae). Contr. Bolus Herb. 3: 1-425. [All rights reserved]
