Morphological description

Rootstock producing a tuber. Tuber 40-120 diam., depressed with warty upper surface. Stem annual, twining, up to few m long, pubescent. Leaves somewhat fleshy, petiolate; petiole 2-6 mm long; lamina ovate, lanceolate, ovate-oblong or elliptic-oblong, up to about 50 mm long, sometimes undulate, pubescent. Flowers in pedunculate lateral cymes, few to many, developed in succession; peduncle up to about 12 mm long; pedicels 3-9 mm long, puberulous. Sepals deltoid-lanceolate to subulate. Corolla straight or somewhat curved, 20-30 mm long, puberulous; tube 15-25 mm long, sub-globosely inflated at base up to 5 mm diam., cylindric above, slightly dilated at throat; lobes connate at tips, linear-oblong, 5-10(-12) mm long, spreading wider than mouth, replicate, glabrous or puberulous on back, tomentose-villous or glabrous on inner face. Corona united at base, sub-campanulate; outer lobes spreading, forming a 5-fluted or lipped bowl 0.75 mm deep; inner lobes arising from within bowl, 2 mm long, lanceolate-acuminate in upper half, 0.5 mm broad, attenuated into a slender stipe or claw. Distribution

General notes: Fairly well drained bushveld, grey soils, shale. Partial sun, Northern aspect, 50 degree slope, undisturbed. Creeper twining tightly around branches. Cluster of flowers opening progressively. Flowers green speckled profusely with dark maroon spots, the cage is brown and inside lightish maroon. One specimen found on steep slope 20m above Mooi River. <2m high.
