Penaea gigantea (R.Dahlgren) Byng & Christenh.
Indigenous Endemic

Morphological description

Tall, erect shrubs, when fully grown usually 1-3(-4) m high, straight, rather sparingly branched, with straight branches leafy on upper 30-100 cm. Stem ridges ending at the nodes as simple, conical-subulate teeth on each side of the leaf bases. Leaves (broadly lanceolate to) narrowly ovate or elliptic to broadly ovate, the larger ones usually 15-25(-30) mm long and 7-11 mm broad, those below the inflorescences usually 11-22(-26) mm long and 6-9 mm broad, usually obtuse (but sometimes with a blunt tip) at the apex, relatively weak (‘mesophilous’) for the species. Upper surface with more or less closely spaced stomata. Inflorescence usually 10-16-flowered. Branches often ramified near the ends, the inflorescences often being grouped in clusters of 2-6. Bracts of lowest flowers normally slightly prolonged in the apical parts (though on the average much less than in ssp. cneorum), usually 7-12.5 mm long and 8.5-13.5 mm broad at the base, the frequently triangular apical part sometimes pale violet. Bracts of upper flowers shorter than the lower. Bracteoles of lowest flowers 4.2-6.0 mm long and (0.7-)0.9-1.6 mm broad. Perianth tube (up to base of incisions) (5.6-)6.0-6.5(-7) mm long; lobes c. 2.4-2.9 mm long. Capsule walls c. 6 mm long or more. From: Dahlgren, RMT. 1971. Studies on Penaeaceae VI. The genus Penaea L. Opera Bot. 29: 1-61. As: Penaea cneorum Meerb. subsp. gigantea R.Dahlgren

Diagnostic description

In the Knysna Division especially the populations of ssp. gigantea often meet with ssp. ovata, and there they are smaller-leafed and via a series of intermediates merge into this subspecies. Ssp. gigantea is the geographically most limited of the subspecies distinguished. It consists of a series of forms characterized by their large total size and large leaves. The most large-leafed forms occur chiefly in the close vicinities of George, such as the lower part of the Montagu Pass and the slopes of the Cradocksberg. The leaves in this area are usually up to 2 cm long and up to 1 cm broad. Other forms, for example in the upper parts of the Outeniqua and Montagu Passes and further distant from George, especially in the Knysna Division, are on the average smaller-leafed and merge into the still smaller forms enumerated under ‘intermediates’ below. The pollen grains in ssp. gigantea are and 5-colporate, especially in the less large-leafed forms prevailingly 4-colporate. In many samples only a small percentage of the pollen is stainable in cotton blue, hut this may partly depend on the insufficient pollen material. The upper side of the leaf is stomatiferous, and the epidermal cells have relatively thin and even walls. From: Dahlgren, RMT. 1971. Studies on Penaeaceae VI. The genus Penaea L. Opera Bot. 29: 1-61. As: Penaea cneorum Meerb. subsp. gigantea R.Dahlgren

Habitat

The subspecies grows on moist, sandy or rocky soil in relatively tall scrub. It is usually found near water courses or on steep, moist slopes. From: Dahlgren, RMT. 1971. Studies on Penaeaceae VI. The genus Penaea L. Opera Bot. 29: 1-61. As: Penaea cneorum Meerb. subsp. gigantea R.Dahlgren

Distribution

The centre of distribution is in the southern parts of the George and Knysna Divisions, extending somewhat into the Humansdorp Division. From: Dahlgren, RMT. 1971. Studies on Penaeaceae VI. The genus Penaea L. Opera Bot. 29: 1-61. As: Penaea cneorum Meerb. subsp. gigantea R.Dahlgren
