PLANTAE / PHANEROGAMAE / ANTHOPHYTA / SAXIFRAGALES / CRASSULACEAE / CRASSULOIDEAE / CRASSULA / ELEGANS / ELEGANS
Plants with or without carnose base. Leaves glabrous, glabrescent or more or less densely covered with fine hairs. Flowering period: (December) January-March. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
This species is widespread and often locally common, but in contrast to other species of this section it prefers to grow on sandy soil and in partial shade.Plants are usually glabrous but may vary from minutely hairy or velvety to glabrescent with tufts of hairs around the hydathodes. Too little is known about plants from the area just south of Lüderitz Bay to determine whether a range of intermediates can be found here from hairy, as in subsp. elegans, to the coarse rounded papillae of subsp. namibensis, as has been recorded for C. grisea. The shape and size of the leaves are also variable. In the area between Port Nolloth and Komaggas the leaves are somewhat elongate and pointed so that these plants can only be distinguished from depauperate specimens of C. grisea by the completely shrivelled old leaves. The leaves are more or less pyramidal in shape but just north of Vanrhynsdorp the apices are often very rounded and in extreme forms the leaves are almost spherical. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Usually growing on sandy soils and often in the shade of other plants or rocks. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
Found in south-western South West Africa/Namibia and widespread in the north-western Cape Province. From: Toelken, HR. 1985. Crassulaceae. Fl. S. Africa 14: 1-229. [CC BY]
